The Gauteng Education Department says counselling has been made available at a school in Benoni, after a 13-year-old boy died on Tuesday.

Louis de Jonge died at home after complaining of severe headaches which were allegedly related to bullying at Noorderlig Gekombineerde High School.

Spokesperson Steve Mabona said the department of Education is currently conducting an investigation into de Jonge’s death.

“The department of education confirms the investigation of circumstances surrounding the death of a grade 7 learner at Noorderlig Gekombineerde High School‚” said Mabona.

“We will report on the outcome of the said investigation after completion thereof. We sincerely convey our deepest condolences to the family; we have offered counselling to learners‚ educators and family.”

According to media reports, de Jonge and his brother were badly beaten on September 4 by a learner in school, while two of his friends cheered him on.

It is believed after the alleged attack de Jonge complained about severe headaches.

On September 15, it is alleged that the same group of boys kicked a soccer ball at him, which hit him in the face.

De Jonge complained again about the headache which might have led to his untimely death on Tuesday.

Speaking to Inside Education, Police Spokesperson Colonel Mack Mngomezulu said they were waiting for the post-mortem to determine if his death was linked to the injuries he sustained during the assaults.

“We are investigating an inquest; once the post-mortem has been conducted we will know the cause of death.”
