The Gauteng Education Department has postponed grade 1 and grade 8 School Online Admissions for 2020 following concerns raised by unions and school governing bodies.
The Federation of Associations of Governing Bodies of South Africa, SAOU and other school governing bodies said that since it is the first time the department is implementing the Amended Admissions Regulations and Feeder Zones, more time and greater awareness on the changes of the new legislation was necessary.
In a statement released Sunday, Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi said, “The MEC humbly acceded to the request and as such the Admission Application period will commence on 20 May at 8 am and close on 22 July at midnight.”
“Despite the department having constant consultative platforms involving all the stakeholders regarding the amendments to the Admissions Regulations and the Feeder Zones Regulations, we note that all stakeholders accept the application of feeder zones, but there are concerns that parents need better understanding of how the new admissions platform works with the feeder zones and regulations,” Lesufi said.
The department assured the public that it would continue to use all platforms available to make the admissions process more widely understood.
Lesufi apologized for the postponement.
Community centres will be used as walk-in centres to apply online for admission to grade 1 and grade 8 for the 2020 academic year.
